Australia
Australia is one country that has it all, and no matter what you're interested in, you'll find it here. Biologically diverse and with more ecosystems that any other single country on the planet, Australia has both temperate and tropical rainforest, deserts, beatiful rivers and amazing mountain ranges, idyllic beaches and of course, the outback.
Sydney's Darling Harbour is worth a visit, and there are plenty of things to do in the city, as well as in the Blue Mountains just outside. Melbourne has a fashionable, arty vibe, and Brisbane has the laid back feel of a country town combined with all the amenities of a state capital. The southbank is a great place to meet up and have a barbeque, and the city centre is small enough to walk around easily.
All along the East Coast there are great places to stop. Coffs Harbour is a quiet little place with a wildlife haven just by the beach. Byron Bay is very laid back, and close to Nimbin, the ultimate hippy town where the banners are painted with flowers and people who could be your mother will try to sell you hash cookies. Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast is the place to go if you're looking for a party atmosphere or surfing, but if that's not your scene, head down to Currumbin or Tweed Heads for scenic walks, or go inland to the Gold Coast Hinterland, where there are some lovely picturesque spots. Further north, Airlie Beach is the starting point for sailing trips in the beautiful Whitsunday Islands, and Fraser Island offers everything from 4-wheel drive tours to a luxury hotel. Cairns is a great break from city life, and gives easy access to the Daintree rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef, where there is plenty of good diving or snorkelling.
Darwin is a great base for exploring the Liechfield and Kakadu national parks, and a 4hr drive south, Katherine is a good place to learn more about Aboriginal culture. Alice Springs is an interesting town and the closest town to Uluru (ayers rock) and Kata Tjuta (the olgas).
Tasmania is often left off itineraries, but it is an amazing little state. The eastern half is pure English countryside, the west filled with jagged mountains and lush rainforest. Hobart is a lovely little capital with a stunning harbour at the foot of Mt Wellington, and on the west coast, check out Strahan, a tiny, friendly town where you can take a cruise around Macquarie Harbour to a former penal settlement and the rainforest. Also worth a look is Queenstown, a mining town with a rich history.
